Benefits of Volunteering

  • You get a free race Crew T-shirt
  • You get the satisfaction of helping others
  • You will have a great time!

Volunteer Captains:

Would you like to take the lead on a specific area? We need highly motivated and organized leaders to take the role as captain for all areas. Volunteer captains will help recruit volunteers pre-race and on race day captains will take the lead for their area by educating, organizing and managing large groups of people to facilitate the assigned job. Captains will receive a special volunteer t-shirt to identify themselves. Captains will be asked to attend one required captains meeting one month prior to the event.

Pre-Race Volunteer Opportunities:

Registration/Packet Pick Up:

This pre-race job is a great way to meet and greet every registered athlete. The job consists of checking athletes in, giving them their assigned bib number, race shirt and other goodies. This is fun, social, and interactive. There are many shifts and times to choose from so you can find something that fits your schedule. If you check in with a friend we will make sure you are placed together. You may sign up for more then one shift but please look carefully at the times and plan to be there for the entire shift, we cannot replace you if you leave early.

Wednesday through Friday are the most difficult day shifts to fill and we would love your help.

Registration days and shift times are:

Wednesday April 14, Thursday April 15, and Friday April 16:
    8:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
    11:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
    2:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Race Day - Saturday April 17th
    4:15 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

Start and Finish Line:

Jobs at the Start or Finish line include:

  • Timing assistance
  • Preparing and handing out water

When signing up for Start or Finish line you will be placed in one of these two areas. Both jobs take place right next to each other.

Kids Corner:

Kids Corner is an interactive zone for children 12 and under. This area needs to be staffed by volunteers to ensure safety and security. Responsibilities include: gate security, troubleshooter/floater, safety monitors.

Course Marshals:

Offer directional help to runners on the course. Cheering is definitely involved!

First Aid Stations:

First aid is offered at each mile as well as Start/Finish line, expo and kids corner.

Water Stations:

There are 3 water stations on the 4.2 mile course. Water station volunteers are open to groups of 50 or more. Please contact sage@sage-sports.com for details.

Groups of Volunteers:

We welcome large groups! In fact we reserve special jobs just for groups of people so that they may all work together. Water station jobs are reserved for groups of 50 or more, Kids Corner and course monitors are great for groups of 20 or more. A pre-race group job is mail stuffing which involves preparing packets for those participating as a Shadow Runner.

If you would like to sign up a large group to work one area together please email Sage Grossi: sage@sage-sports.com for information and to get set up.

Volunteer FAQ

What happens after I sign up online?

You will receive a confirmation email within three (3) days of signing up welcoming you to Pat's Run and confirming you as a volunteer. Two (2) weeks prior to the race you will receive a letter via email with specific instructions about the job and shift you signed up for, parking information and any other announcements.

What if I cannot attend?

Email the volunteer coordinator, ASAP, at the email address listed at the bottom of the page.

What if I cannot work the whole shift?

Once you sign up, we count on you for the full shift. We cannot replace you if you leave early. Sometimes the shift may seem over-staffed and slow, but often we are preparing for a rush. We count on each volunteer for help at the busy end of the shift. Please do not leave your post.

I would like to volunteer at a water station.

Water stations are typically staffed by large groups. We suggest volunteering at the start/finish line for an exciting day.

May I bring a friend?

Yes! We can always use extra help!

How should I dress?

Wear comfortable shoes, layers for cool to hot temperatures and clothes that are comfortable. All jobs will take place outside - this includes Registration/Packet Pick Up. The only job that takes place inside is Mail Stuffing. You will receive a volunteer t-shirt that identifies you as a part of the Official Race Crew.

What should I bring with me?

As little as possible. There is no storage so you will have to carry any items you bring with you. Almost all areas will have a corner where everyone can set their coat or lunch but it will not be secure. We recommend wearing a backpack.

Can children volunteer?

The official age for an unaccompanied child to volunteer is 16. We are concerned about safety and the ability to stay focused on a job for the time involved. Direct any questions on this issue to the volunteer coordinator in an email.

Do volunteers get a discount on race entry fees or a complimentary entry?

No. Pat's Run is the signature fundraiser for the Pat Tillman Foundation and all proceeds benefit the Foundation.

What if I am unable stand for long periods of time?

Registration / Packet Pick Up is the place for you! You will be able to be seated most of the time checking athletes in.
