Tillman Scholars Honored

Danielle OrsilloCongratulations to 2007 Tillman Scholar, Danielle Orsillo, on her feature in Sports Illustrated's Year in Sports issue on newsstands now. She is recognized for her volunteerism and 150 plus hours spent working with mentally disabled adults. Inspired by her brother, Mark, who has Down syndrome, Danielle is working to stage a free oncampus basketball clinic for several hundred mentally disabled participants. As part of the Tillman Scholars-Leadership Through Action™ curriculum, students are required to address real problems in society and develop and test solutions. Danielle's aspirations caught the eye of local business owner, Matthew Weatherly of Public Sector Personnel Consultants, who has pledged to provide funding for her project. "What struck me about Ms. Orsillo was her willingness to give of her time and talent to make a difference in the lives of others in her community. What a great and compassionate example for others to follow."

Danielle is a Communications major and plays guard on the Sun Devil women's basketball team. "I think it is such a cool opportunity to be a Tillman Scholar. I have met such incredible people and have already had many great opportunities. I am most excited about my upcoming service project in the spring and am so thankful that I get to pursue it knowing I have a lot of people behind me."

Contact Suzanne Reddie at if you are interested in sponsoring a Tillman Scholar service project.

When asked about her first semester experience as a Tillman Scholar, Sarah states, "The Tillman Leadership Through Action™ program has given me the opportunity to work with an exceptional group of students from various backgrounds. I am continually being challenged by the other scholars and feel as though I have not only become more aware of my leadership skills, but that I have learned from others and developed a new set of leadership skills. The lessons I've learned from the teachers, scholars, mentors, and other people involved in the LTA program are things that I will take with me in order to become a more effective everyday leader."This semester Sarah plans to develop a program that teaches children about the importance of healthful eating and staying active. Together with partner and Tillman Scholar, Nikki Candela, they hope to culminate their program by having a team of kids participating in Pat's Run this April.
