This past Sunday, Tillman Military Scholars Cormick Wong and Rudy Rickner completed the 2011 Tunnel to Towers run, which commemorates fallen NYC firefighter Stephen Siller’s heroic journey along the courses route in 2001. Siller was off duty on the morning of 9/11 but after hearing of the morning’s events, Siller drove to the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel and from there continued on foot toward the towers, carrying 70lbs of firefighter gear with him. Siller perished when the towers fell.
The Tunnel to Towers run brings together firefighters, police, military and first responder groups who run the route together, some in uniform. In total, Cormick and Rudy joined approximately 20,000 other runners and walkers in this year’s race.
